Willenhall cycleway – Abbey Road to Toll Bar End
Last year, we hosted two drop-in sessions to discuss plans to improve connectivity between Coventry city centre and Tollbar End. Thank you to everyone who attended one of the sessions, your feedback has helped to shape the next phase of this scheme.
The plans aim to make travel safer and easier for walking, wheeling, and cycling. The new design, shown below, builds on work around Abbey Road, London Road, and Humber Road.
Work will start in the area near Folly Lane Club and Kenelm Court on Monday 15 June 2026, with later sections delivered in phases. Work will include:
- 1km cycleway along London Road, mostly segregated, with two short (80m) shared sections for pedestrians and cyclists
- upgraded junction at St James Lane, with new toucan crossings and smart traffic signals that detect people and vehicles
- safer side-road crossings at Abbey Road, Carnegie Road, Seymoor Close, Sunbury Road, and Stonehouse Lane
- enhanced bus stops at Carnegie Close, St James Lane, and Stonehouse Lane for better flow, access, and passenger safety
- resurfacing, new signage, and road markings
- pavement improvements along the whole length for people walking and wheeling
- new parking area on the right of the green space opposite Folly Lane club. We will use a material that allows the grass to grow through it
Thanks to your feedback, we are also including the following:
- new pedestrian crossings at Folly Lane Boys club and Robert Close
- new signalised junction at Chace Avenue after comments received from consultation meetings
- there is currently no right turn in or out of Chace Avenue at London Road. This restriction will be lifted when the new signalised junction has been completed
Once the work in the area near to Folly Lane Club and Kenelm Court has been completed, work will take place at:
- St James Lane Junction
- Timeline: Mid-July – Early September 2026
- Traffic Management: Temporary signalised junction (remotely controlled to optimise traffic flow).
- Pilot Close
- Timeline: Early September – Early October 2026
- Traffic Management: Two-way temporary traffic lights
- Chase Avenue
- Timeline: Early September – Mid-October 2026
- Traffic Management: Chase Avenue will be closed for the duration of this phase, with two-way temporary traffic lights on London Road for one week only.
- Cycle Lane Installation
- Timeline: Early November 2026 – Completion in Spring 2027
We will keep this page updated as work progresses.

Your feedback
In November last year, we asked what you thought of the plans. You can see the feedback we received and our responses to that feedback.
Road safety audits
All cycle schemes are subject to three detailed safety audits. There are three stages: one at the start of the design process, one that is carried out during construction, and a final audit on completion of the work. Safety audits are an essential part of cycle schemes as they help to ensure that our plans are reviewed independently.
An independent team carries out the safety reviews. These are now available to view.
