Willenhall cycleway – ASDA roundabout
We are improving connectivity between the city centre and the area by Coventry Airport, where the West Midlands Green Power Park is located.
We plan to make improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers at ASDA roundabout.
These improvements, shown on the plan below, include:
- pavement widening and new crossings on all arms of the roundabout and dedicated cycle crossings, separate from both pedestrians and vehicles making it easier to cross the road. All crossings will have tactile paving
- new landscaping and tree planting
- new Toucan crossings for pedestrians and cyclists
- upgraded lighting future phases of work will include completing the cycleway from Tollbar along London Road and into Humber Road, where it joins the existing Binley cycleway which then provides a route into the city centre.
These improvements will benefit pedestrians and cyclists, whilst also encouraging through traffic on to roads like the A45 and A444 rather than residential roads.
We asked what you thought of these plans last year. You can see the consultation report, and the ASDA roundabout feedback responses.
September 2026 update - work starting on site
Work will start on site from Monday 21 September. The main work will start from 28 September. We expect the work to be finished in spring 2027.
The first phase of the work will take place on the central island. This will include improving drainage and making the road wider. We will also make changes to the pedestrian refuge islands at the Asda and Humber Road sections of the roundabout.
There will usually be two teams working in different parts of the site at the same time. This will help the work move forward more quickly and efficiently.
Most of the time, traffic will be managed using lane closures. Road closures will only be needed near the end of the project, when the final resurfacing work takes place. The traffic management will be checked every day.
We will share updates on this webpage for each stage of the work. These updates will explain what work is happening and any changes to traffic management.
June 2026 update
We will be starting work on the ASDA roundabout later in the year, currently planned for an October start.
Our plans are un-changed, we will be providing crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. Unfortunately, we could not get permission to use some of the land outside our ownership to create the slip road into the shopping centre. However, we are planning to make some improvements to the walking, wheeling and cycling route between Cheylesmore and Whitley with new crossings across the A444 and a new connection to the footpath on London Road.
January 2026 update
- We can confirm that the detailed design of the scheme is underway and is expected to be complete by approximately May/June this year. Following this, we will seek to procure a contractor with the intention of commencing construction later in the year, possibly late Summer / early Autumn.
- You may see some activity in the coming weeks as we undertake on site surveys to inform the design.
