The Urban Rangers play a vital role within the Parks and Open Spaces team, caring for and enhancing a wide range of sites across the city, including parks, woodlands and green spaces.
Their work ranges from constructing and maintaining key site infrastructure - including boardwalks, bridges and fencing. They also carry out essential seasonal land management tasks such as strimming, hedge cutting, mowing and crown lifting. The Rangers work closely with other Council teams, including Parks and Open Spaces Officers (POSO's), the Ecology and Biodiversity team and the Urban Forestry team, supporting tree planting initiatives, enhancing parks and open spaces, and creating and protecting wildlife habitats.
Keep up to date with the latest projects, events and behind-the-scenes moments from Coventry’s Urban Rangers on social media. You can find them on Instagram and on X.
Supporting Communities
The Rangers work closely with a wide range of resident and community groups across the city, attending meetings and supporting local events. They also liaise with Community Development Services and key stakeholders, including schools, universities and organisations such as Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and The Conservation Volunteers.
Friends of Parks groups play a vital role in supporting and enhancing Coventry’s parks, and the Rangers actively encourage and support their work. For more information about joining an existing group or setting up a new Friends group in your local park, please visit the Friends of Parks page.
Events
The Urban Rangers also host a range of popular events, including:
Bands in the Park – A series of free Sunday afternoon concerts running from June to September in parks across the city, featuring brass, acoustic and jazz bands.
Guided Bat Walks – Evening walks held in late summer and early autumn in parks and woodland areas. Join us to learn about the fascinating lives of bats and listen to their calls using bat detectors.
Volunteering with the Urban Rangers
Each month, the Urban Rangers host a weekday Volunteer with the Rangers session. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity to get involved in practical outdoor work across Coventry’s parks, woodlands and green spaces.
Sessions are free to attend and you’re welcome to stay for as long as you like — it’s completely up to you. They are open to adults only, and we ask that you wear suitable outdoor clothing, such as waterproofs and sturdy footwear.
No previous experience is needed. The Rangers will provide guidance and support throughout the session, so everyone can get involved with confidence.
For further information, you can join the Volunteering with the Rangers mailing list by emailing: urbanrangersvolunteers@coventry.gov.uk. You can also check the Council’s Events page for details of upcoming sessions.
Corporate Volunteering opportunities
The Urban Rangers welcome volunteer groups from organisations and businesses in and around Coventry. Corporate volunteering sessions take place outdoors in one of Coventry’s parks, woodlands or green spaces.
All tools and equipment are provided, and activities can include tree planting, hedge cutting, habitat management and small structure building. Sessions can be tailored to suit your group, providing a rewarding, hands-on way to support the city’s green spaces.
