Housing element of Universal Credit

The housing element of Universal Credit helps eligible tenants pay their rent and some basic service charges. It has replaced the legacy Housing Benefit for most working-age people.

The housing element is not automatically included in a Universal Credit claim and needs to be requested separately. If it is missing, you may have difficulty paying your rent.

Check your Universal Credit account to see whether you receive a housing element payment. If you think you should be receiving help with your housing costs, but it is not included in your Universal Credit award, contact the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) as soon as possible.
