Admission to Primary School into Reception (starting school for the first time).

If your child is due to start Primary school in September 2020 then you will find out the result of your application on the National Offer day of the 16 April 2020.  If the Admissions team are unable to offer you a place at your preferred school, you have the right to go through the appeals process.

Your allocation letter will explain the reasons why it was not possible to offer you a place at your preferred school and the process for appealing against this decision. This means that you have a chance to put your case to an independent appeal panel made up of people who have had no connection at all with the original decision. Going through the appeals process does not guarantee you a place at the school you are appealing for and does not affect your position on any waiting lists for other schools.

Please note: You can only appeal for a school once you have received a refusal letter for that school and you can only appeal once in an academic year for each school. If you have been refused a place at more than one school and wish to appeal for more than one, you will need to complete a form for each school.

Infant class size

The law states that in any ordinary teaching session infant classes (Reception, Years 1 & 2) must not contain more than 30 pupils with a single teacher and the admission authority can therefore refuse admission on infant class size prejudice grounds if the admission of an additional child would breach the infant class size limit and there are no measures that the admission authority could take to avoid this without prejudicing the provision of efficient education or the efficient use of resources.

Appeals received after the closing date will by heard within the schedule, if possible*

*The deadlines for our administrative purposes has remained but, due to the national response to the Covid-19 crisis, new legislation was required from Government to enable appeals to continue.  Consequently, there has been a delay in hearing appeals submitted.  We are aiming to have all appeals that are submitted by these deadlines heard by an appeal panel by 7th August wherever possible.
