Potholes on roads

A pothole is where the surface of the road has been worn away, making a hollow. Potholes can form quickly and are a hazard to the public highway.

We investigate all reports of potholes. How quickly the work is carried out depends on how much of a danger the pothole is to road users. This is difficult to judge as all potholes present some risk.

The things we look at include:

  • size and depth of pothole
  • traffic type, speed and volume
  • the road
  • visibility
  • the position of the pothole on the road.

Currently we undertake routine safety inspections and condition assessments of our highway network regularly at various intervals, depending on classification of road and traffic / pedestrian volumes.

We aim to:

  • Repair potholes more than 40mm deep within five to twenty working days; all other potholes (where work is considered necessary) within 40 working days.
  • Carry out inspections every 12 months on all roads in Coventry and place orders for any necessary repairs. Classified roads (main roads) are inspected on a more regular basis.

To report an urgent issue, please contact our Customer Services team. When reporting a pothole please tell us exactly where it is (outside which house number or lamppost number).

Pavement faults and trip hazards

We aim to:

  • Repair pavement faults/ trip hazards that are more than 20mm deep within five to twenty working days. All other pavement faults/trip hazards (where work is considered necessary) within 40 working days.
  • Carry out inspections every 12 months on all pavements in Coventry and place orders for any necessary repairs. Pavements on classified roads (main roads) are inspected on a more regular basis.
