Using your comments to invest in the city

Last year we have received slightly more funding than we expected from the government. This has given us more headroom in setting our budget than we thought. As a result of that additional funding and our organisation’s careful management, we were able to invest in our services.

Elected Members chose these areas based on the feedback that we'd received through the 2024 'Your Voice Counts' Survey. In that survey residents had highlighted areas such as the roads and fly-tipping as being areas for further investment. So we acted on these concerns.

We invested £700,000 into tackling roads, potholes and defective pavements. We have increased the number of road repair teams from six to 10, which means we have fixed 8,246 defects compared to 7,216 on average before. We’ve also treated 22 miles of road and 16 miles of pavement, taking preventative measures before further issues can happen. You can get a closer look at this work on our YouTube channel.

Thanks to an investment of £150,000, our Highways Team were able to 5,500 gullies. The team have also developed a more efficient maintenance system which will allow them to improve the service going forward. You can see the Team in action on YouTube.

Residents were clear to us that fly-tipping was a major concern. So we invested £420,000 in order to hire more staff to clean more problem areas around the city. In addition to these extra clean-up crews, we've invested £80,000 into additional CCTV cameras. We now have 30 in total across the city. The Team have dealt with 11,000 referrals this year.

Alongside this investment in enforcement, we're also funding a new pilot scheme which will see us work closely with residents in Ball Hill to keep the area clean. By enforcing where we need to and working to tackle the issues at source, we're working with communities to make our city a better place to live, work and visit. You can read more about the scheme on our news pages.

This year's consultation will help us decide where we can take further action like the above. So it's vital residents have their say.
