Certificates that are issued

Death certificate

When booking an appointment, you will have the option to pre-pay for two death certificates. The fee for each certificate is £12.50.

Death certificates are often needed to deal with the deceased person's affairs. Many organisations, such as banks, pension providers, insurance companies, utility companies and solicitors, may ask to see an official copy of the death certificate before they can close accounts, transfer assets or process claims.

Purchasing certificates at the time of registration can be more convenient and may help avoid delays when managing these arrangements. Additional certificates can be purchased if required when booking your appointment or at the time of registration.

Certificate for burial or cremation (issued free of charge)

The registrar will issue a certificate for the burial or cremation of the body, which is normally emailed to the funeral director. A funeral cannot go ahead until this certificate is given to the burial authority or the crematorium. If there is a delay to the registration of the death, it is possible for a certificate for the burial to be issued before registration, as long as the death does not need to be reported to the coroner. A certificate for cremation cannot be issued before the registration of the death.

If a death has been reported to the coroner, he or she may issue a certificate for burial or cremation where possible.
