2025 Recipients

Ms Pauline Black OBE DL

In recognition of her status as an icon of British music and leading role in the 2-Tone and Ska music revolution of the 1970s that became synonymous with Coventry and spread a message of racial harmony. In over 50 years of performing with The Selecter, she has been a pioneer for Black performers, and in particular Black women, and combines her career with her role as a Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands and work with local communities.

Dr Stuart Croft FRSA DL

For his work as Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of Warwick and the leading role he has played in city life since 2007, including serving as a Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands. He has dedicated his whole life to higher education and academia and has been instrumental in bringing inclusive economic growth to Coventry, overseeing the university’s work to build links with local communities, charities and residents and be a part of city life.

Ms Sybil Hanson

To recognise her significant role in education in Coventry over more than 50 years, including 25 years at Blue Coat CE School. Her contribution is highly valued by the many organisations she has served, including the Board of Directors for the Inspire Education Trust, the Diocesan Board of Education, and the Schools Forum, and at the age of 85, she continues to play a leading role in education in the city.

Councillor Abdul Salam Khan JP

In recognition of his service to Coventry City Council since 2007, including his roles as a member of the Cabinet for 15 years and Deputy Leader for 10 years. Throughout this time, he has demonstrated a profound commitment to inclusivity and respect, showing how the strength of Coventry lies in its diversity, and has represented the city around the world, helping to lead its work as a city of peace and reconciliation and inspiring others towards friendship.

HHJ Andrew Lockhart KC

In recognition of his service to the City as Honorary Recorder, serving the City with great dedication, dignity and pride and significantly contributing to the Civic Life of the City.  Providing invaluable support to Lord Mayors and Council officers, attending functions and days of ceremony, including those associated with the passing of the late Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of His Majesty King Charles III. He has been a true ambassador and advocate for the City.

Mr Mark Robins

For the way he took over as manager of Coventry City FC for a second time in 2017 when the club was at an all-time low and restored its pride. As well as making the team better on the pitch, he helped to re-establish the club as a true part of Coventry life, taking players and staff into the community, building links with local groups, supporting work in diversity and equality, and instilling a real sense of togetherness. 

Mr Jon Sharp

To recognise the way this true Coventry Kid who developed his love for rugby while a student at Bablake Grammar School, took over at Coventry RFC when it was on the verge of bankruptcy and steered it to its best position for many years. He has also helped build strong community links with schools and local clubs, and created ‘Project 500’, which has helped over 6,000 children enjoy activities and hot meals.
