About the Job Shop
Coventry City Council’s Job Shop has recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary. In which time we have supported over 65,000 Coventry Residents with tailored 1:1 support, successfully assisting nearly 15,000 people into paid employment, and have worked with over 200 businesses each year to find vacancies relevant to our customers.
Customers are supported by experienced employment coaches to secure financial independence, upskill, enter training and education, source volunteering opportunities and receive barrier-breaking support, tailored personally to their individual needs.
We are delighted to announce that the Job Shop’s Employment and Skills projects have been awarded money as part of the West Midlands Combined Authority’s and HM Government’s Fund to deliver two exiting new projects:
Connect to Work [https://www.wmca.org.uk/what-we-do/employment-and-skills/youth-employment-plan/connect-to-work/] which is designed to provide support for young disabled residents, residents with long-term health conditions, and other those with other barriers to finding work. This funding will enable our team to be offer supported employmentâ through the delivery of 2 evidence-based Employment Support models:
- Individual Placement Support (IPS), support is integrated with primary and secondary health care services at a physical level. This model embeds work as a health outcome for customers with moderate to high levels of need e.g. mental health/physical health
- Supported Employment Quality Framework (SEQF), support is integrated alongside community support including family with a deeper level of support for customers with a higher level of needâ
Youth Trailblazer [https://www.wmca.org.uk/what-we-do/employment-and-skills/youth-employment-plan/youth-guarantee-trailblazer/] part of the Government’s Youth Guarantee enabling all 18-21 years in England have access to education, training or help to find a job or apprenticeship.
As well as continued investment from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund [http://www.gov.uk/government/publications/uk-shared-prosperity-fund-prospectus], which aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills.

Voluntary Action Coventry
Who work to influence change and innovation in systems and services locally, to shape a more fair and equal future and improve people's lives. They encourage resilience in communities, by supporting people to build their personal capacity, and enabling them to do more for themselves.
Their Improving Lives course is for anyone aged 18 years and over who wants to know more about volunteering opportunities in Coventry and have a go at some volunteering activities to increase their confidence and well-being. The Improving Lives course consists of 12 structured sessions of engaging activities, discussions, visits and support that take place twice a week. Additionally, participants can access to one-to-one support and guidance to help them with volunteering or employment barriers.
The aim is to support participants to focus on their futures and realise their potential, improving confidence in their own skills and abilities and what they have to offer, and to learn about and practice elements necessary for finding, applying for and securing volunteer or work roles.
We are passionate about the voluntary and community sector and the role that volunteering plays in enhancing individuals and communities.

Foleshill Women’s Training
We offer support to women - all delivered at our women only centre, which is single sex, safe and trusted.
- Open to all women in the city but specialist support for women who are:
- Ethnic minority
- Multiple barriers and complex needs
- Excluded
- We offer a HOLSTIC programme of support to enable Economically Inactive women to ‘move forward’ towards better wellbeing and economic outcomes:
- Access to basic skills including Pre-Entry ESOL, and Digital Skills – provided by FWT and external partners.
- Weekly Wellbeing Workshops online – themed, linked to health, IAG, external partners presenting.
- Monthly onsite Wellbeing workshops
- Plans for external wellbeing activities – canal walks, library visits
- Volunteering opportunities created at FWT and at external partners.
- Digital skills modules and courses – referrals internally to Barclays Life Skills
- Internal referral for wrap around support for health, integration, Coventry Women’s Partnership (domestic violence, sexual violence, at risk of exploitation, legal support, housing)

Connect to work
Currently, it is estimated that there are about 3 million economically inactive people in the UK, of whom 1.9 million people would like to work, but are not engaged in the labour market, sometimes due to health issues or disability.
Connect to Work will support up to 100,000 individuals with disabilities, long term health conditions or complex barriers across England & Wales to secure work. It will help connect local work, health and skills support and help eligible participants to secure sustainable work through a voluntary supported employment model, adhering to Individual Placement & Support (IPS) and Supported Employment Quality Framework (SEQF) frameworks
Connect to Work is a voluntary programme funded by the UK Government to support disabled people or people with health conditions, and individuals with complex barriers to move into and maintain employment. It will also provide support to those in work but at risk of losing their employment, helping them to retain their jobs.

Customers who are suitable for Connect to Work Programme should:
- Meet the current Connect to Work eligibility criteria
- Aged 16 - 24
- Not be on another DWP funded programme e.g. Restart or Work Well
- Live in the Coventry City area (CV1 - CV6)
- Be unemployed, or employed but at risk of losing employment, if you have been at your job for more than 3 months (this does not include zero-hour contracts)
Have a health condition, disability, or be part of one of the specified groups with complex barriers into employment that would benefit from support as stated:
- An offender who is serving a community service
- An ex-offender who has completed a custodial or community sentence
- A carer
- An ex-carer
- A homeless person
- A former member of His Majesty’s (HM) Armed Forces (AF), a member of HM AF reserves, or a partner of current or former Armed Forces personnel
- A person for whom a drug or alcohol dependency, including a history of dependency, presents a significant barrier to employment
- Care experienced young person or a care leaver
- A refugee, a resettled Afghan
- A person on the Ukrainian scheme
- A victim/survivor of domestic abuse
- Young people identified as being involved or at risk of being involved in serious violence
- A victim of modern slavery
Participants on the programme will receive specialist one-to-one support from a dedicated Employment Specialist including:
- Vocational Profiling and personalised Action Plan
- Access to a wide range of employers
- Health-related interventions and support
- Job specific CV and cover letter creation
- Mock interviews
- Better-off calculations
- National Careers Service skills and job assessments
- Travel planning
- Ongoing in-work support
- Career progression and development support once in-work
